Abstract
The Versailles Advanced Materials and Standards VAMAS project is a forum for prestandardization research. It has helped spread awareness of new testing and characterization methods around the world. Technical Working Area (TWA) 3-Ceramics has been active since 1987. It has contributed to many formal national and international standard test methods, primarily for advanced or technical ceramics. Three reference materials have been developed subsequent to the VAMAS projects. This article provides an overview of the 12 projects and the lessons that have been learned about conducting international round robins. As many as 35 laboratories have participated in some of these round robins, all the more remarkable when one realizes that VAMAS projects are not funded and that participation is completely voluntary.Citation
