Abstract
An observation technique for machining cracks in ceramics has been developed. Palladium (Pd) nitrate water solution was impregnated into a bending specimen using cold isostatic pressing. Following a failure test, crack geometry was determined from a Pd element distribution map which was obtained by analysis of the fracture surface suing an Electron Probe Micro Analyzer. The machining crack geometry of hot pressed silicon nitride was readily determined from the Pd distribution map and recognized as a series of adjoining cracks. Stress intensity factor calculated using dimensions of adjacent major cracks in the middle of the series shows good agreement with the fracture toughness of the test material. It is inferred that cracks in the ends of the series play a minor role in fracture.Citation
