Abstract

Properties of a graded material were characterized with a procedure based on an inverse analysis. This inverse analysis procedure utilizes experimental records obtained from instrumented micro-indentation measurements and extracts key properties of indented specimen through a Kalman filter technique. It enables determination of the compositional profile and the effective mechanical properties without resorting to complex experimental measurements. The graded specimens that were evaluated were fabricated by plasma spray deposition with controlled PSZ and NiCrAlY powder feed and possessed varying elastic-plastic properties through the thickness.
