Stress Evolution in the Thermally Grown Oxide Layer in Thermal Barrier Coatings as a Function of Thermal Cycling

Abstract

Stress measurements in the thermally grown oxide layer of thermal barrier coatings are presented. Stresses were determined from photoluminescence measurements made through the zirconia top layer as a function of the number of thermal cycles. Photoluminescence experiments determined that the photoluminescence signal originated in the thermally grown oxide and not in the zirconia.
