Abstract

The Numisheet 2005 Benchmark 3 consisted of forming four different automotive sheet materials in a two-stage process. The first stage consisted of forming channel sections in an industrial-scale channel draw die in which material flow is controlled by drawbeads. Material was formed through the drawbeads, over the die profile radius and into the channel sidewalls. This forming process resulted in the channel sidewalls being uniformly prestrained in a mode of plane strain. The second stage consisted of taking the prestrained channel sidewall pieces and further forming them in a Marciniak double-blank test, either parallel or perpendicular to the first stage principal strains. The primary objective of Benchmark 3 was to verify if current numerical codes are capable of accurately predicting the behaviour of sheet materials in a complex, multi-stage forming process. Moreover, the first stage of the benchmark provided experimental data that can be used to validate the numerical predictions of forming and springback behaviour for material that was formed by cyclic bending and unbending through a drawbead. However, the experimental data reported at Numisheet 2005 were obtained with only a single drawbead configuration: that is with 75% drawbead penetration. This investigation is a continuation of the work reported at Numisheet 2005 and the same four sheet materials were formed in the same channel draw die but this time with drawbead penetrations of 25%, 50% and 100%. For each level of prestrain, the principal strains as well as the springback angle and radius of curvature in the channel sidewalls were recorded.
