Abstract
The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) High Temperature Fatigue Resistant Solder Project, carried out by a consortium of eight industrial corporation, academia and NIST, has completed its four-year program to identify and evaluate Pb-free high temperature fatigue resistant solder alternatives to high lead solder alloys. This project was initiated in response to an identified need for high temperature fatigue resistant solder as well as potential legislation which would ban or restrict the use of lead. Applications are directed toward harsh environments found in electronics of the avionics, military, oil exploration, and automotive industries, where high temperature reliability is of concern.
