Microstructure-Wear Resistance Relationships for YSZ and Alumina Plasma Sprayed Deposits

Abstract
A simple sectioning method was applied to investigate the changes in the wear resistance of two thermally sprayed deposits, two yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and alumina, subjected to heat treatment. These changes were correlated with the changes in the microsturcture of the deposits, characterized by intrusion porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and small-angle neutron scattering. Analysis of the results indicates that changes in the wear resistance are likely due to changes in the shape and the surface area of the voids caused by sintering and crystallographic phase transformations.
