Abstract
With the need for mobility comes stringent quality of service requirements that have to be met before users are able to roam seamlessly across different network infrastructures. In this paper we investigate the use of a handover-based call admission control algorithm for WLANs in order to guarantee quality of service for real-time applications such as voice and video. Our mechanism aims at maximizing the utilization of the resources available, reducing the blocking probability of handovers and more specifically limiting the occurrence of hard handovers that can lead to severe performance degradations in terms of additional delay and packet loss.
