Abstract

An experimental acousto-optic tunable filter that has a narrow spectral bandwidth [0.2 nm at 1550 nm] and a fast [10 [mu]sec] tuning capability with a continuous tuning range of 52 nm is described. By combining a conventional diffraction grating with an acousto-optic beam deflector, spectral bandwidth has been significantly reduced and the number of usable wavelength channels within the erbium-doped fiber amplifier [EDFA] passband is increased by approximately 20 times. The filter also permits simultaneous and independent selection/routing of many wavelength channels for multi-channel wavelength division multiplexing [WDM] filters/routers/switches or fast scan optical spectrum analyses
