Abstract
A central theme of modern materials science has been the exploration of the relationship between the microstructure of a material and its macroscopic properties. The answer to many materials science questions requires knowledge of the specific composition of fine scale phases. The impact of Castaing's electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) to provide such information for materials science has been extensive. Topics to be surveyed include (1) basic materials science information infrastructure: determining equilibrium phase diagrams; (2) two-dimensional chemical structure; (3) diffusion studies; (4) solid state reactions: alloy age hardening; (5) coatings and interfaces; (6) light element analysis and (7) material failure analysis.Citation
