Multisine Signals for Wireless System Test and Design

Abstract

We discuss the use of multisine test signals for system verification and model development in the laboratory. We highlight the utility of multisine excitation for test and verification of telecommunication systems, where nonlinear elements such as power amplifiers are intended to transmit digitally modulated signals. We discuss advantages of the use of sinusoidally based test signals and describe ways to determine the number and distribution of the frequency components in the multisine to emulate a desired digitally modulated signal. Common wireless figures of merit are defined in terms of multisine signal characteristics and test set-ups that can measure multisine signals are introduced. Finally we present some applications of multisine excitation in model development and system verification.
