Description of the Nonlinear Behavior of Superconductors Using a Complex Conductivity

Abstract

The origin of the detrimental nonlinear response in the high Tc superconductor (HTS) microwave devices is currently not well understood. In order to help elucidate the origin of these nonlinear effects, we have performed phase-sensitive measurements of the nonlinear harmonic products generated by HTS planar devices at microwave frequencies. Such phase-sensitive measurements can help to determine if the nonlinear response observed in HTS devices is due primarily to a nonlinear resistance, or a nonlinear inductance, or is due to a combination of the two. We use these phase-sensitive measurements along with traditional single-tone harmonic generation measurements and also with two-tone intermodulation measurements to obtain a consistent description of the nonlinear response of HTS thin films in terms of a nonlinear complex conductivity. We also discuss the correlation of the observed nonlinear response in HTS thin film devices with other material parameters
