Abstract
An instrument has been constructed for generating the complex scanning and data-collection sequences required for scanning tunneling microscopy. The instrument is controlled by and returns data to a laboratory computer over an IEEE 488-bus. A very high data-collection speed was achieved through the use of a digital signal-processing microprocessor coupled to a 16-bit I/O processor.Citation
