Abstract

Measurements of the asymmetry in the scattering of unpolarised electrons from optically pumped spin-polarised sodium atoms have been carries out at incident electron energies of 20, 54.4, and 70 eV and for a range of scattering angles between 20° and 140°. This asymmetry, which was first proposed by Farago as a means of measuring spin-orbit effects in the presence of a dominant spin-exchange interaction, is less than 1% at all energies and scattering angles studied.
