Abstract
A time-dependent model of magnetization and demagnetization temperature profile is developed based on thermodynamic and heat transfer laws, material properties, and variable-field magnet parameters. Test results of a magnetic refrigeration test bed operating at room temperature are compared with the model calculation. The results of the calculated temperature profile in the refrigerant bed are inserted into an iterative process for a regenerative thermal wave propagation calculation to predict the best time to start cold and hot gas flows through the refrigerant bed. The model can be used to simulate optimum operating conditions and duty cycle of a magnetic regenerative refrigeration. The effects of the thermal conductivity between the magnetocaloric material and the thermocouple on temperature measurements and thermal lag are presented.Citation
