Abstract
Contemporary coating technologies increasingly require uniform and stable thin polymeric films for use in paints, adhesives, electronic packaging, and biotechnology applications. Current understanding of film stability on substrates is mostly limited to bulk polymer films and the parameter space that can affect stability of thin film is large (molecular mass, temperature, film thickness, substrate interaction). We report the use of combinatorial gradient energy method to investigate the effect of surface energy, temperature and molecular mass on the structural organization of ultrathin polymer films. We have mapped out a transition line between wetting and dewetting in thin polymer films as a function of temperature and surface energy.
