Abstract

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry has been shown to be an effective method to determine the degree-of-intramolecular-condensation of polymeric silsesquioxanes. The nature of the organic R' leaving group was found to have a significant effect on the degree-of-intramolecular-condensation. Differences in the hydrolysis rates of the two R' groups provided a likely explanation for the effects observed. Broadly considered, these results point to a means to understand reactivity and gelation in silsesquioxanes and in condensation-reaction systems in general.
