Technologies for Condition-Based Maintenance of Machine Tools

Abstract

NIST has embarked upon a research effort to advance the capabilities and promote the continued growth of condition-based maintenance (CBM) technologies for the discrete-parts manufacturing industry. This research is focused on providing an alternative to failure-based and schedule-based maintenance by using sensor information to detect abnormal machine behavior and impending failure and to predict remaining life. The initial effort concentrated on the development, application, and demonstration of CBM technologies for machining systems and machine tool components. This paper discussed the prototype implementation of a IEEE 1451-based sensor network for remote monitoring of machine tools for CBM purposes and the development of a linear motor drive testbed system for studying the performance characterization and failure mechanisms in machine tool applications.
