Ceramics are increasingly being considered for wear resistant applications. The design and prediction of ceramics wear, however are lacking behind metals. This paper addresses the ability to predict wear of ceramics by examining a large data base of four ceramics over a range of speed and load conditions as described by three dimensional wear maps. The approach is to examine each ceramic in each wear regime taking into account of the complex dependence of wear on microstructures, surface roughness, interfacial temperatures and contact mechanics. Then these models are combined to look at the data from two perspectives: severity index and materials normalization parameters. The results are wear prediction capable of + one order of magnitude over the range of materials and operating conditions.
