Iron and Permalloy Based Magnetic Monolithic Tunable Microwave Devices

Abstract

We constructed a series of Magnetic Monolithic tunable Microwave notch-filters and phase shifters in co-planer waveguide (CPW) geometry on GaAs substrates using Fe and Permalloy as magnetic materials. In contrast to previous work with Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) grown metallic ferromagnets, our devices were created by the sputtering technique. The resonance frequency of the Fe based CPW filters shifted from 9.3 GHz at zero applied magnetic field to 15 GHz for a magnetic field as low as 0.9 kOw. The tunable magnetic attenuation is greater than 35dB/cm for the whole field range. The phase shift or these Fe structures can be up to 100 /cm at 6GHz for modest applied magnetic fields, which may be useful in the communication industry. In comparison to Fe CPW filters, the Permalloy based filters show a resonance shift from 2 GHz to 9 GHz over the same magnetic field. The attenuation characteristics of the Permalloy based filters (6 dB/cm) is weaker than in the Fe filter. The transmission characteristics of the filtes are dependent on substrate quality,film deposition parameters (Argon pressure, growth rate, power,etc.) and grain size. In particular, the GaAs substrate produced a substantial anisotropy field (500 Oe) which can be used to bias the device in the absence of an external magnetic field.
