Abstract

This bulletin summarizes information disseminated in NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-121, Guide to Bluetooth Security: Recommendations of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which was written by Karen Scarfone of NIST and by John Padgette of Booz Allen Hamilton. The guide helps organizations protect their Bluetooth devices from security threats and vulnerabilities. The bulletin summarizes the information in the guide, and covers the characteristics of Bluetooth technology, the security features of Bluetooth technology, and the vulnerabilities and threats to which Bluetooth technology is exposed. The bulletin summarizes NIST s recommendations to organizations to protect their Bluetooth networks and devices by using the strongest security mode available, addressing the use of Bluetooth technology in organizational security policies, and providing security awareness and training about the use of Bluetooth devices to staff members.
