Abstract

Measurements of the relative electric permittivity (dielectric constant or relative permittivity) e(p,T) and refractive index of fluids n(p,T) as a function of the pressure and the temperature can be used to determine a wide range of thermodynamic properties. The electrical conductivity of the fluid is a key factor in determining the frequency of the measurements, which in turn determines the geometry of the sample container and the instrumentation. The measurement of the relative permittivity of non-electrolytes is described in Section 1. Experimental techniques for refractive index are given in Section 2 while Section 3 describes the measurement of both refractive index and relative permittivity of electrolytes.
