Abstract

The materials science of cement and concrete is the focus of the Inorganic Materials Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). These experimental and computational research efforts include component and finished materials characterization, workability and rheology of fresh concrete, cement hydration, micro- and nanostructure of hydrated phases in cement paste, particle shape and size, adaptive concrete technologies, and durability prediction and mechanisms. Information about the group s efforts is widely distributed via journal articles and via the web, using the group s Electronic Monograph, which is currently over 4000 pages long and is accessed by over 12,000 distinct users per month from over 90 countries. Information is also given out via the annual Computer Modeling Workshop, held at the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland (USA) every year since 1990. This paper summarizes the activities of the group, and gives many references to published work and to the Electronic Monograph for those wishing to pursue the details of the research. A tribute to Dr. Geoffrey J.C. Frohnsdorff is also included, as he was the founder of the modern cement and concrete materials research at NIST.
