Abstract
Numerous studies have been conducted so far on active or hybrid (active/passive) control of hysteretic structures using a wide range of linear and nonlinear control algorithms. However, most research work on the use of semi-active control systems has been limited to linear structures. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of two types of semi-active dampers for seismic applications in hysteretic structures, namely variable viscous (VV) dampers and magnetorheological (MR) dampers. The structures used in this study are modelled with a 1-D shear type representation having a linear or hysteretic response. The algorithms used for selecting the control forces in the dampers include the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) algorithm. A number of linear and hysteretic structures subjected to the 1940 El Centro earthquake are analyzed using the algorithms to investigate the effectiveness of the control systems. The results of the various analyses indicate that VV and MR dampers can be effective in reducing the displacement and acceleration responses of both linear and hysteretic structures.
