Abstract

We summarize results of ongoing research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology into the development of a new generation of standard provisions for wind loading that uses aerodynamic and climatological databases to improve significantly the description of wind-induced design loads. We illustrate how the limitations of conventional provisions lead to inefficient and inconsistent designs for steel frames in low-rise buildings and a lack of risk consistency between wind load factors specified for hurricane-prone regions and extratropical storm regions. We then discuss how such databases are being used to develop calculation procedures consistent with the use of a performance criterion for structural collapse in low-rise buildings whose design is governed by wind loads.
