Nanofiber Supported Phospholipid Bilayers

Abstract

This work reports on the creation and characterization of nanofiber supported bilayers to mimic the hydrodynamic, chemical and mechanical environment provided by the actin network which supports natural lipid bilayers within a cell. Lipid bilayers were formed on a nanofiber mat made from polycaprolactam nanofibers coated with silica (SiO2). Lipid diffusivity and bilayer impedance were measured and found to be comparable to measurements from black lipid bilayers.
