We present a novel beam shaping method to generate nondiffracting beams with a specific transverse shape. By tailoring the angular spectrum of a Helmholtz-Gauss beam using an iterative Fourier transform algorithm, we produce beams with a specific intensity pattern and the extended propagation distance characteristic of nondiffracting beams
