Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine if a concentrated calcium pre-rinse given before a F rinse would cause an increase in the post rinse salivary fluoride (F). The three pre-rinses tested, (30, 150 or 300) mmol/L calcium as calcium lactate, followed by a 1 min NaF rinse, significantly increased the 1 h saliva F relative to the NaF control without a pre-rinse by the following factors: 1.75, 8.8 and 6. It is concluded that increases in oral calcium through the use of a relatively concentrated calcium rinse shortly before application of F greatly increases oral F retention, and thus increases the 1 h concentration of salivary fluoride.
