Abstract
Recent advances in optical imaging technology have the potential to improve the accuracy of disease detection and predict treatment response. The critical end-point for the success of any new imaging technology is clinical outcome. The following review considers the validation of novel optical imaging standards from a pathologist s point of view. A pathologist can provide a critical link between ensuring that appropriate biopsy tissue is acquired for both the disease diagnosis and for image correlation studies using biomarkers derived from pathology gold standards. We will consider the selection of such validation biomarkers; pathology standardization in tissue processing, diagnosis, reporting and quantitative analysis; and reference standards, controls and data inter-compatibility between institutions.
