Abstract
Electrospray-differential mobility analysis (ES-DMA) represents an attractive tool to determine directly the coverage and conformation of long, flexible molecules on engineered nanoparticles. For example, nanoparticles coated with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) hold potential for a variety of uses ranging from cancer treatments to DNA sequencing probes. However, rapid quantification of the coverage and configuration of the ssDNA coating remains challenging but of clear importance for these properties affect the stability, properties and utility of the nanoparticle suspension. We demonstrate ES-DMA as a new nano-metrology tool for the characterization of these biologically interesting, engineered nanoparticles, and we report a simple random walk model to determine the coverage of the DNA.
