Abstract
We describe powder and single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a spinel-type antiferromagnet GeCo2O4 with orbital degrees of freedom, which is a candidate for a geometrically orbitally frustrated system. Several types of short-range spin excitations were discovered. The scattering intensity maps in Q space are well reproduced by several spin molecule models. These features are similar to those in a spin frustrated system. However, ferromagnetic correlations are dominant in the low-energy spin fluctuations above and below TN, suggesting that degrees of freedom other than spin are frustrated. Orbital frustration is the likely origin, suggesting that we have observed orbital frustration through scattering from spin.
