Abstract
Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and cellulose were reacted in the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmiAc). Side reactions between the EmiAc and each reactant were prevalent, but use of water as the coagulating solvent produced microencapsulated POSS in cellulose. The effects of cellulose sources, POSS reactive groups, NaOH pretreatment of cellulose, and regenerating solvent were examined using elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and thermogravimetric analysis. The POSS cellulose products were found to have good thermal stability and a high char yield.
