Status Report on the Development of the Interoperable MPI Specification

Abstract

An industry lead effort to create a protocol for the interoperation of MPI (Message Passing Interface) implementations has been ongoing since March of 1997. Meeting have been held several times per year with many implementers of MPI participating to help define the Interoperable MPI protocol (IMPI).This process has resulted in a simple protocol that can be incorporated into existing implementations of MPI to provide for interoperability. In this paper we describe IMPI along with some of the reasoning for its design. We also describe an IMPI tester, developed at NIST, that tests implementations for compliance to the protocol. The first complete version of IMPI will be ready by the time this report is published and we expect IMPI compliant implementations of MPI to become available soon after.
