Abstract
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has developed the Standard Reference Material (SRM) 2460 Bullets and 2461 Cartridge Cases. NIST has also developed a 2D and 3D Topography Measurement and Correlation System using NIST proposed parameters for ballistics signature measurements. NIST and ATF are proposing to establish a National Ballistics Measurement Traceability and Quality System using the SRM Bullets and Casings to support the ATF's National Integrated Ballistics Identification Network (NIBIN) in the United States. In 2008, NIST and ATF initiated a National Ballistics Imaging Comparison (NBIC) Project to gather data and establish control charts for the proposed system.
