Abstract
By the first quarter of 2006, two risk studies of major levee systems (over 1500 miles of levee) in the U.S. were underway. The IPET Risk and Reliability Analysis was a retrospective analysis and the DRMS was a prospective analysis intended to support strategic planning. This paper presents of summary of these studies, the systems analyzed, their scope, and results. For purposes of this paper, the discussion of the DRMS risk analysis will focus on the seismic performance of levees. Seismic risk in the Δ is a major contributor to the overall risk and is unique since seismic hazards are typically not a threat to levees. In addition, lessons and insights from these studies are discussed.
