Sustainable Process Analytics Formalism: A Case Study of Book Binding System for Energy Optimization

Abstract
Energy is considered as one of important factors in sustainable manufacturing due to its relevance to depletion of material resources and generation of carbon oxide. To improve energy efficiency in manufacturing, optimization techniques are essential to provide decision support. However, using such technologies is challenging since the development of formal optimization models for complex sustainability analysis requires substantial development efforts and modeling expertise. Consequently, this valuable technique is under-utilized and formulating and solving energy optimization in manufacturing is still difficult. To address these limitations, Sustainable Process Analytics Formalism (SPAF) has been developed to facilitate the modeling and optimization. In this paper, the SPAF will be applied to a case study on energy optimization for a book binding production system. The knowledge of process flow, data, and metrics of the case is represented using SPAF, preliminary analysis of optimization results has been performed.
