Open Handwriting Recognition and Translation Evaluation (OpenHaRT)

The NIST Open Handwriting Recognition and Translation Evaluation (OpenHaRT) is an evaluation of transcription and translation technologies for document images containing primarily Arabic script. The evaluation seeks to break new ground in the areas of document image recognition and translation toward the goal of document understanding capabilities. The objective is to assess the current state-of-the art and to build the critical mass required to solve challenges posed in these areas so that technologies developed from OpenHaRT can be used to distill the vast amount of information available only in foreign language documents in a timely manner.

The OpenHaRT evaluation is modeled after the evaluation of the DARPA Multilingual Automatic Document Classification Analysis and Translation Program (MADCAT), also conducted by NIST. While MADCAT evaluation is limited to DARPA's contractors, OpenHaRT is open to all who find the tasks of interest.

The OpenHaRT Evaluation series had its first evaluation in the Summer of 2010. A follow up evaluation planned for the Spring of 2012 has been postponed to the Spring of 2013. Those who are interested to find out more about the 2013 evaluation should go to the OpenHaRT'13 information page for additional information.

Those who are interested in keeping informed about the latest information about the OpenHaRT evaluation can subscribe to the general OpenHaRT mailing list (hart_list [at] nist.gov (hart_list[at]nist[dot]gov)) hosted by NIST by sending an e-mail to hart_poc@ nist.gov.

Questions or comments about OpenHaRT can be sent to hart_poc [at] nist.gov (hart_poc[at]nist[dot]gov).
