Abstract

We report on the characterization of an RF Josephson Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizer (RF-JAWS) at frequencies up to 3 GHz. The synthesizer output is generated by pulsedriving a series array of 1500 Josephson junctions (JJs) that are embedded in the center conductor of a coplanar waveguide on a chip that is located at 4 K in a cryostat. The signal generated by the JJ array and measured using a calibrated twoport large-signal network analyzer (LSNA) is within 0.1 dB of the calculated, quantum-based value of -48.3 dBm at low frequencies; the discrepancy increases with frequency to 0.4 dB at 3 GHz due to the JJ pulse width.
