Abstract

A peridynamic model for polycrystalline materials is used here to model the evolution of elastic-brittle damage under fatigue conditions. The peridynamic simulations for elastic deformations in a polycrystal are verified against Finite Element solutions on a two-grain model and the synthetic microstructure René 88DT, an FCC polycrystalline Ni-base superalloy. The peridynamic formulation has the advantage of allowing discontinuities to nucleate and grow, and thus connects deformation states to crack nucleation and propagation processes. The model shows damage nucleation locations that match the computed Schmid factors for the given microstructure.
