Automated Passive Interoperability Testing for Cellular V2X

Abstract
Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), a critical component of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), is a wireless technology that enables vehicles to communicate with their surroundings (e.g., other vehicles, roadway infrastructure like traffic lights, and pedestrians) to improve road safety and efficiency of safety-critical applications (e.g., emergency brake warning, intersection collision warning). However, a significant challenge for the mass deployment of C-V2X technology is the mutual interoperability and seamless communication between diverse On-Board Units (OBUs) and Road-Side Units (RSUs). Therefore, interoperability testing, measurement, and assessment methodologies are crucial to overcome this challenge. This paper presents an open-source, automated, passive interoperability testing tool designed to orchestrate synchronized data acquisition across heterogeneous C-V2X hardware platforms. By utilizing a passive or non-intrusive approach on the C-V2X device, the tool automates the lifecycle of packet capture on the PC5 sidelink interface without altering the radio environment or requiring proprietary software access. Our tool provides a vendor-agnostic, scalable, and extensible framework for collecting high-fidelity traces necessary for cross-vendor protocol validation and standardized interoperability analysis.
