STANDARDS-BASED DIGITAL TWIN COMPOSITION: ROBOT ARM AND GRIPPER

Abstract

Digital twins are used to monitor, diagnose, predict, and optimize systems' performance, often for the purpose of informing human decision-makers or automatically controlling systems. However, it is impractical to create a large-scale, monolithic digital twin for each factory floor or to develop a digital twin from scratch for every new production unit. To reduce the complexity and cost of the development, such digital twins can be created through the composition of multiple component digital twins to enable modular design and facilitate the digital twin reuse. Individual digital twins can be reused in various configurations to form digital twins of larger systems with various purposes. Deciding how these component digital twins should talk to each other, consolidating multi-vendor data formats, and ensuring lifecycle validity of the composed digital twins, and ensuring scalability and consistency are very challenging tasks. A new international standard (ISO 23247-6) has been developed to address these challenges. This research involves implementing an integrated digital twin of a robot arm and a gripper, following procedures outlined in the standard to demonstrate an Integrated Digital Twin Composition (DTC) approach. The implementation is analyzed to identify the benefits and challenges following the standards. Future topics of standardization are identified and discussed.
