Abstract

This paper presents the development of a digital twin for a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) using open standards and supporting technologies. The approach is demonstrated through a case study in which a compact CMM inspects a machined part. Inspection data are collected and structured using the Quality Information Framework (QIF), providing semantic context for measurement results. Motion data capturing the position of the CMM probe tip along the X, Y, and Z axes are also collected. The MTConnect standard enables standardized machine data collection and synchronization with the digital twin through eXtensible Markup Language (XML). Validation is performed by comparing data from the digital twin with data from the physical CMM. The results demonstrate the feasibility of implementing CMM digital twins using open standards while highlighting the need for automated bidirectional data exchange between the digital twin and physical system. This study establishes and demonstrates a standards-based, interoperable architecture that integrates inspection- and motion-based digital twins within a unified framework, providing a foundation for future research on real-time data streaming, advanced analytics, and automated feedback to improve coordinate measurement and performance of manufacturing systems.
