Abstract

The SI unit of mass, the kilogram, is scheduled to be redefined in 2018 as part of a broader redefinition of the SI in terms of fundamental constants. The kilogram will be realized in terms of the Planck constant within a vacuum environment. This realization must be transferred to air and then disseminated to the international measurement community via calibrated artefacts. This paper describes the NIST implementation of a mise en pratique for the future realization and dissemination of the kilogram using a watt balance and a unique vacuum-to-air transfer method based on a magnetic suspension technique. A pool of mass artefacts for dissemination is also being prepared. This mise en pratique will enable "one stop shopping" at NIST to realize and disseminate the new definition of the kilogram.
