NIST OWM Info Hour: “Digitalization” of SMART Standards

NIST Office of Weights and Measures Info Hours

In this session, we will continue exploring the digital formats and tools the NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) is utilizing to meet the growing demand for digital standardization products. We will demonstrate how to navigate the OWM Publication Web Pages and explain how these resources are organized to help you locate specific documentation faster.

We will also review our current progress in transitioning NIST publications into "SMART" (Standards Machine-Applicable, Readable, and Transferable) standards. You will learn how to effectively access and navigate a NIST SMART Standard to maximize its utility in digital environments. Additionally, we will provide practical examples of how to utilize various formats, including PDF, HTML, EPUB, and DAISY, to enhance your workflow.

OWM Info Hours: Digitalization of SMART Standards — The NIST Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) hosts a series of Information Hours, or "Info Hours," that feature insights on topics relevant to legal metrology and documentary standards through an informal technical discussion and Question and Answer forum. In this week's session, NIST OWM’s Isabel Chavez Baucom provides an update on OWM’s efforts to transition NIST publications into SMART standards. By the end of this presentation, viewers should be able to analyze the value of SMART standards; define SMART Levels 2 and 3; navigate multi-format NIST publications including PDF, HTML, ePUB, and DAISY XML; evaluate the workflow transitions from Microsoft Word to XML; and apply lessons learned from pilot projects.
