Abstract

The textile industry is increasingly recognizing the need to transition towards a more circular economy to address growing concerns about the environmental and social impacts of textiles and, in particular, the rapid increase in the amount of textile waste being generated.. A recent workshop held in collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, ASTM International, and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) explored the role of standards in facilitating the transition to a circular economy for textiles. This workshop examined the need for standards in the areas of terminology, sorting, recycling, design, labeling, and digital product passports for this industry. This report describes the key discussions and findings of the workshop and highlights areas where specific standards needs were identified. The report concludes with recommendations for the next steps and a proposed roadmap to begin developing the identified standards to enable circular textiles.
