2024 Safety Award

AWARD CITATION

The group is recognized for developing and executing a safety plan for a large-scale, live-flight uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) competition. The plan included novel and unique safety systems to protect life and property during the event. Because of thorough planning and execution, the NIST team and first responders were able to immediately respond to a UAS crash that resulted in a potentially hazardous fire. The executed safety plan ensured that no people were at risk and that crews suppressed the battery fire within minutes with no injuries or damage to property.
