Awarded for achievements in science and engineering. The group is recognized for developing and executing an innovative research program to experimentally measure and analyze the effects of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) on the material and structural integrity of reinforced concrete infrastructure, with application to nuclear power plants. The group’s achievement provided novel scientific performance data and insights that are being used by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop regulatory guidance for recertification of nuclear power plants containing concrete structures affected by ASR
