Abstract
We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of multiferroic ERFeO3, a compund that possesses three different magnetic states and exhibits signatures of Fe3+-ER3+ cooperative coupling. A crystalline electric field excitation at 6 meV exhibit additional energy splitting upon cooling through 4.5 K, with mode-dependent polarization. One excitation shows canting out of the bc-plane, but another displays canting away from the a-axis, a feature that is not seen in low temperature diffraction measurements. Simulations highlight that these cooperative effects are not adequately described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian.Citation
