Pre-Fire and Post-Fire Data Studies in the WUI are a systematic effort to document and understand the fire and ember exposure, and consequential damage, from a wildland fire which burned into a developed area. The purpose of such studies is to provide a technical basis for mitigation solutions, conclusions, and lessons learned to improve community preparedness and resilience to wildland fire exposures. Supporting data collected may include information about structure construction, location, and damage (or lack thereof); fuels, both vegetative and structural; weather; topography; fire behavior; defensive actions; fire event timeline; witness and first- responder observations; available data regarding pre-fire conditions; and other relevant data contributing to a complete account of the event. This encyclopedia article presents the basic concepts and brief examples of such WUI data studies.
