Abstract

We propose using an on-off fluid source model for queuing statistics under TCP. This model was originally introduced to model queuing statistics of ATM multiplexers by D.Anick, D.Mitra and M.M.Sondhi. A good approximation for packet loss probability is crucial for development of accurate TCP fluid approximation models, which are useful because of their relative mathematical simplicity. We validate the model by comparing queue length distributions predicted by the model with experimentally obtained ns2 queue length distributions for a range of parameters. Our results show that the new model significantly outperforms the frequently used M/D/1/B model.
